First Year Running 2008

Having just arrived in the Highschool we were asked to enter a Running Competition. The four of us, James Murphy, Sean Tobin, Sean Gunne, and Reece Maher, all won running competitions on our own. We decided which events we were most strongest in for the main events.

Our first running competition was in Thurles. We were all nervous about the race. We were like best friends in school but in competitions we were enemies. Three of us were in the Clonmel Athletics Club ( Sean Tobin, Reece and James). Sean Gunne had only ever ran for St. Peter and Pauls. Sean has done extremely well in his competitions. In Thurles we arrived and we had a look at the pitch and warmed up soon afterwards. It was an extremely bad day and the course was in a terrible condition. Everyone was slipping before the race. We then lined up at the start of the race. When we heard the gun we all got off to a flying star. As we were coming to the end it was a close race between Sean Gunne and Reece Maher. Sean Tobin received a gold medal and was the county champion and James Murphy received bronze. We then went to Tralee for the Munster Championships. We just arrived on time for our race. There was a massive hill during the race, but luckily we were going down the hill not up! Sean was in the lead between him and a person from Limerick. It was a close finish. Sean just missed out on gold and got silver instead. While James was 5th, but just as people were beginning to pass him out, he was at the finish line, took a chance and came fourth. Reece and Sean Gunne were in good contention for a great place. While Reece was trying to beat Sean Gunne it was a close race between the two and Reece just got in ahead of him in the last sprint. Then in the Munster indoors in Nenagh only three could enter in an event. So Sean Gunne did the Hurdles in which he came an unbelievable fourth. Sean Gunne entered the 800m race where he ran very well. Reece was in the 1200m race in which he came sixth. James Murphy entered the 800m where he ran a great race to finish 5th. James was also in the 1200m where he came 5th again. Sean Tobin came 4th in his 800m and fourth in his 1200m. Then we came to the local event which was held in Clonmel Og. We all helped to set up the course. Sean Tobin won it, James came second, Reece came third, Sam Ryan came fourth and Sean Gunne came fifth. We all ran excellent races under the coaching of Ms. Deely and we would never have been able to get to the Munster Indoors without the help of Anthony Tobin (Sean’s father).
We were the first Highschool team to win the County and Munster shield. We are now the Munster Champions

Success for Finbar on Irish Team

Finbar Horgan of Clonmel AC had a fantastic end to 2006 when he competed on the Irish Team in the recent Celtic Games which were held in Waterford on 12 th of August. This was Finbars 1 st international vest and in the manner in which he competed, there is no doubt that this great athlete can look to the future with more than a hope of many international honours.

Finbar competed in the 400m U/18 Invitation and finished a very close fourth behind the Scottish champion, a magnificent performance by an athlete what will be eligible again next year. Spurred on by this, Finbars next event was the 4x400m relay, where he ran the third leg. He received the baton in second place some 50mts behind Scotland. Fintan Walsh, the commentator of the race became very excited as Finbar began to close the gap quite visibly at which stage the large Irish contingent rose to their feet and began to roar Finbar on. After giving 100% Finbar handed the baton over to the Irish Champion, Brian Gregan who was 20mts behind at this stage, Brian just failing to catch the flying Scotsman and Ireland finished second to round off a great year for Finbar.

By Zachary Guidera (member of Clonmel Athletic Club)

At the start of this year, 2004, the athletes of Clonmel have come on leaps and bounds to win the first Juvenile team Cup the two Shields for Clonmel A.C. Many High School students have contributed to this success winning both individual and team medals.

New faces such as Keith Landers, Padraig Hickey, Carol Norris, Daniel Fraughen and the young Colm Nolan have joined us in the past months to bring pride and glory to Clonmel Athletic Club. These athletes will go on to do well not only in the County Championships and the Munster 's but in the All Ireland Championships.

Athletics is a sport for everybody. You do not have to be able to run fast, as there is something for everyone. The high jump, long jump, triple jump, sprints, middle and long distance running, the hammer, the shot, discus, javelin and the hurdles are some of the categories. The athletes in the club always enjoy themselves as the self-satisfaction, team spirit and camaraderie is high.

I hope that today's members will go on to have the same opportunities as some of our past members for example, going on scholarships abroad and at home and meeting new friends.

If you are interested in joining us, we train every Monday and Thursday night from 6p.m. to 7 p.m. New members are always welcome to come along and participate in this great sport. Thankfully there are new faces every week and these young athletes are the future of Clonmel A.C. as the vibrant and successful club that it is today.
