High School CBS Rugby Presentations
On Wednesday 22nd May, we had a number of rugby presentations to round off a most memorable and historic year for our school teams.
Our U16 team was presented with their Munster Schools Mungret Shield Winners medals. This is the first time a High School team has won the Mungret Shield and the players received their medals form Clonmel RFC 1st XV members Stephen Pyke and Ciaran Burke. It was great to have Stephen and Ciaran back in the High School, both of whom are past pupils and were on the team that won the Munster Schools O’Brien Cup in 2004, the very first Munster rugby title that was won by a Clonmel team.
We also presented the U14 High School CBS/Clonmel RFC Player of the Year Award to 1st Year JP Phelan who plays for his club and school. JP has had a great year leading by example on the pitch with many impressive performances.
The High School was very fortunate to have the coaching assistance of Clonmel RFC Coach Pat O’Connor throughout the season and Principal Karen Steenson made a presentation to him as a token of the school’s gratitude and appreciation.
Finally, the Rugby and French Scholarship was presented to Transition Year student Brandon Delicato. The Scholarship was established in 2005 in conjunction with Clonmel RFC and Cleary & Cleary Co. Solicitors to promote rugby and French in the High School. Brandon will spend ten days in Soustons, Biarritz this summer where he will receive professional rugby coaching and French tuition. The Scholarship is open to all Transition Year and 5th Year students who play rugby in the High School and with Clonmel RFC. The succesful applicant is awarded the Scholarship following an interview. We wish Brandon a safe and enjoyable trip.
We were honoured by the presence of several very important guests. From Clonmel RFC we had Club President Bob Campion, Secretary Tom Fennessy, Youths Chairman Noel Cunningham, Club Coach Pat O’Connor and Paul Lonergan. As mentioned already, 1st XV players Stephen Pyke and Ciaran Burke presented the medals. It was also a proud day for Brandon’s parents Kerena and Raf who attended. In addition, we were delighted to have our Junior and Senior Cup team sponsors Clonmel Credit Union’s CEO Padraig Enright and Jim Healy present.
Principal Karen Steenson paid tribute to the coaches in the High School who give up so much of their time for the promotion of rugby in the High School: Jean Lonergan, James Hayes, Colm O’Loughlin, Donal Ryan, Jack Lonergan and Brendan Mullan. She also congratulated all of the students who received medals and awards and thanked the invited guests for their continued support. Click Here to view photos.
