Highschool: 4-08 Ballingarry: 1-05
First Year Hurling League

The High School remain unbeaten in the First Year Hurling League after a fine win over a strong Ballingarry side. The final score did not reflect what was a hard fought victory. Most of the High School’s scores came during the last quarter when the Clonmel side finally got to grips with the opposition.

The game was level at half time. Ballingarry had the advantage of the wind in that half and their full-back and centre-back were dominating. In the second half it took the Clonmel boys a long time to settle but eventually they came out on top.

The next game in the competition will be against Clonmel C.T.I. The game will be played next week.

Highschool: 9-15 Cahir Community School: 1-02
First Year Hurling League

The first year hurlers got the league campaign off to an excellent start with a big win over Cahir C. S. The game was played at the Clonmel Óg grounds on Friday (28 th ). The High School boys dominated the game from the beginning despite playing against a stiff breeze in the first half. It did take the home side some time to get used to the conditions and for the first ten minutes it looked like we were in for a low scoring game. By half time however the Clonmel side were well in command.

The High School started the second half with the same determination as the first and when the scores began to flow the game looked over as a contest. Overall it was a great performance. The defenders while never under too much pressure answered any questions that were asked of them. Special mention must be made of John Lyne and Shane Gleeson who launched many of the High School attacks with clearance after clearance. Brian Dillon made a big impression when introduced in the second half. The mid-field pairing of John Cagney and David Harte dominated throughout. It is the forwards, all of whom scored, that have to be given the greatest of praise. David Larrigan played a vital role at center forward. His size was easily matched by his hurling skills. Both wing forwards will be happy with their day’s work: between them they scored 1-07. It was the full forward line that impressed more than any. All the skills of the game were on view with Christy Aylward , Michael Feeney and Steven Brown playing well as individuals but also, more importantly, they excelled as a unit.

All in all it was a great start however tougher opposition will have to be overcome if the High School is to qualify from the group. The next game in the competition will be against Ballingarry. The game will be played next week. A second win would put us in a very strong position in the group.

Highschool: 6-11 Carrick Voc. School: 2-01
First Year Hurling League

The High School booked their place in the final of the First Year Tipperary Championship with a fine win over their great rivals from Carrick.

The game got off to the worst possible start for the Clonmel boys when they conceded two early goals without reply. They responded in fine style though and for the remainder of the half outscored their opponents 4-07 to a point. By half the High School looked to be well on their way to a comfortable victory. The Carrick boys refused to go down without a fight and Clonmel will be disappointed with their scoring return in the second half.

In the end the High School ran out comfortable winners and will play in the final of this competition for the first time in three years.

Co. Tipperary First Year Hurling Championship (Sciath Uí Chatháin)

County Champions !

It was a great end to a great campaign for the High School boys when they won the final of the First Year Hurling Championship in Thurles on Friday. In the end it was a comfortable victory but it was only in the final quarter that the Clonmel boys stamped their authority on the game.

The first half provided thirty minutes of exciting hurling. It was end to end stuff. The crucial score was a great opportunist’s goal from the ever vigilant Michael Feeney who was first to react when Shane Gleeson’s shot from a great distance hit the crossbar. At the interval the High School were happy to have a four point lead given the strength of the opposition.

In the second half the High School upped the tempo considerably and made it clear that they had no intention of leaving the title behind them. It was an exhibition of all the hurling qualities: skill, strength, speed and courage. Even when the game looked over as a contest the Clonmel side continued to hurl with a great urgency. In the end no one could argue with the result. John Cagney received the trophy on behalf of the High School.

It was a great team performance. Goalkeeper, Liam Redmond , was ever-dependable. The full-back line trio of Shane Weste , Brendan Walsh and Gerald Bannon were solid throughout and coped well under pressure; especially in the first half when the Roscrea boys were trying for the crucial early scores.

The Half-back line was perhaps the strongest on the pitch. Brain Dillon made some great clearances and gave great support to his colleagues. Centre-back, John Lyne , showed no fear of Roscrea’s big number 11. He hurled with great confidence and was first out to every ball. Shane Gleeson turned in another great performance on the wing. He seemed to be everywhere: making timely interceptions and great clearances.

Midfield completely dominated their sector. Captain John Cagney , like all great players reserved his best performance for the big day. Beside him David Harte was immense. He was the heart and soul of the side. His strength and determination was an inspiration to his team.

Wing forwards Alan O’Reilly and Richard Fenton both play a very intelligent game and helped to supply the full-forward line with great ball. At centre-forward David Larrigan was a Colossus. He created panic every time he got the ball. He made a huge contribution to the High School victory.

As in previous games the full-forward line proved to be lethal finishers. Steven Browne was unbeatable especially in the first half. One of his points was probably the score of the game. Michael Feeney was quite a handful at full forward and took his scores very well. Christy Aylward always looked dangerous and was unlucky not to come out with a few more scores.

Congratulations to the High School.

U-16 ½ Munster Hurling Championship – First Round

The High School booked their place in the Munster Hurling quarter final with a great win over the Tipperary Town side in a thrilling game in Ardfinan yesterday. It took twenty minutes of extra time to separate the two sides but it has to be said that over all the best team won on the day.

High School captain, Sean Phelan elected to play against the wind in the first half. Despite a shaky first ten minutes the Clonmel side got to grips with their opposition and at the interval had a three point advantage. By the second half the wind had died down and the Abbey started to play their best hurling. Just when it looked like the High School were to survive the Abbey’s resurgence a goal which gave the opposition a two point lead was conceded. With only minutes remaining the High School had to dig deep. It was two magnificent pointed frees from Niall Kelly and Brian Carroll that saved the day. When the referee blew the final whistle the sides were level and extra time was to be played.

The first half of extra time saw the High School play well against the breeze. Martin Dunne scored an excellent long range point which was to be the only score of the half. It was during the second period of extra time that the Clonmel side really turned on the style, scoring four unanswered points to earn a well deserved victory.

It was a great High School performance. It was almost an impossible task to pick a man-of-the-match. In goal Ian Browne was solid while Kevin O’Callaghan hardly put a foot wrong at full back. Sean Phelan played a captain’s part at corner back. He was as sharp as ever, breaking up attack after attack with timely interceptions. In the other corner Tony Ryan was magnificent. The youngest player on the field, he played like a veteran. The half back line was solid throughout . Seamus Lawlor gave everything and seemed to do the right thing at all times. Declan Power showed his usual class and composure on the left wing. At centre back Aidan Rouse at times seemed to be having one of those days when nothing would go right for him. He showed great character in extra time when he came into his own and was instrumental in the victory. At centre field Brian Mulvihill and Michael McHugh never stopped working. With their speed and hurling skill they managed to win their zone. Niall Kelly struggled with injury when introduced but he scored two excellent frees that kept his team in touch at vital moments. Playing at wing forward Brian Carroll had his best game in the red and black jersey. While his scores from frees and play were outstanding his contribution to general play was vital to the success of his team. Shane Kearney was excellent in the number eleven jersey. In extra time he broke the hearts of the opposition with is great ball winning abilities. Martin Dunne did a huge amount of work at on the left wing and took his scores well. Paul Ryan was a revelation at full forward. He created panic in the backs every time he got the ball. His strength and determination were an inspiration to his team mates. One of his two points in extra time was as good as you will ever see: a great shot over his right shoulder from all of fifty metres. The two corner forwards, Michael O’Gorman and Seamus Shannon battled hard and made a great contribution.

All in all it was a great win. Congratulations to all concerned.

The team was as follows:

Ian Browne, Sean Phelan (Capt.), Kevin O’Callaghan, Tony Ryan, Seamus Lawlor, Aidan Rouse, Declan Power, Brian Mulvihill, Niall Kelly, Michael McHugh, Brian Mulvihill, Brian Carroll, Shane Kearney, Martin Dunne, Michael, O’Gorman, Paul Ryan, Seamus Shannon. U-16 ½ Munster Hurling Championship – Quarter Final

The High School’s U-16 ½ Munster campaign came to an abrupt end yesterday in Ballygiblin. It was a day on which nothing seemed to go right for the Clonmel side. For the first 20 minutes the High School dominated every sector of the pitch. Unfortunately this domination was not reflected on the scoreboard. In this period the High School registered nine wides and were to pay dearly for this inaccuracy. Martin Dunne scored the first point of the day and this seemed to steady the nerves somewhat. Two points from Paul Ryan and one each from Michael McHugh and Shane Kearney were to give the High School their total of five points for the first half. Douglas started to hurl well in the last ten minutes of the second half and managed to level the game. Less than a minute before half time Douglas scored a goal which gave them a three point lead at half time which in know way was reflective of the first half.

The second half opened on a promising note with a very fine point from Brian Carroll. This score seemed to spur on the Cork boys who started to play some excellent hurling. While the High School were playing with great spirit they could not match their opponents. With less than ten minutes to go Douglas had stretched their lead to 8 points. This is when the fight back began. Thanks to goals from Michael McHugh and Paul Johnson there were only 3 points between the teams in the dying minutes. High School were extremely unlucky not to get the equaliser but in the end could have no complaints.

Best for the High School:

Seamus Lawlor was excellent throughout. Aidan Rouse had a fine game at centre back. Declan Power gave his usual exhibition of skillful hurling at left half-back. Brian Mulvihill played his best game ever in the red and black and played a huge role in the High School’s fight back near the end. Michael McHugh scored a great goal in the second half and was effective throughout. Paul Ryan had another excellent game for the High School. His determination and work-rate alone, not to mention his hurling ability, make him a contender for High School hurler of the year.

Semi-Final

Games don’t come much more exciting than this one which was played in Littleton on Friday, 23 rd November. The High School found themselves seven points down at half time. After fifteen minutes of the second half the Clonmel side had done little to change things. With Liam Lawlor outstanding at centre back things started to change. Peter Hally , now operating at mid field, burst forward to score two excellent goals to level the game. When Ballingarry responded with a point it looked like they had weathered the storm. It took a brilliant Michael McHugh point to save the day and give the High School a second chance.

Semi-Final Replay

High School had a great win over Ballingarry to book their place in the county final of the Fitzgerald Shield. It was a tough battle and Ballingarry made their Clonmel opposition work very hard for their victory.

The game was played at Gortnahoe and despite heavy rain the day before the pitch was in excellent condition. High School captain, Liam Lawlor , lost the toss and the Clonmel side found themselves having to play with a stiff breeze in the first half. It was however Ballingarry who got off to the better start. They scored a goal and a point and the High School looked like they were in trouble. Ballingarry were playing a third midfielder and this left Eoin Ryan with no one to mark. Many defenders find this unsettling but Eoin stuck to his task and broke the hearts of the opposition’s attack with his brilliant reading of the game. While the backs were getting to grips with their opponents the forwards benefited from the clearances they were making. Niall Kelly began to hurl very well and would finish the half with 1-04 to his credit. His free-taking was excellent. Paul Ryan scored a brilliant goal at vital stage of the first half. Credit must also go to Thomas O’Gorman who did a huge amount of work in the forwards and created a lot of the scores with his selfless play. Peter Hally scored one of the scores of the after a great passing movement.

At half time the High School had built up a lead of seven points but would be facing a strong breeze in the second half.

The second half got of to a good start when Michael McHugh got an excellent point. It was an important score. There were only two more points for the High School but crucially the backs managed to keep the Ballingarry scores to a minimum. Liam Lawlor and Tony Ryan were particularly impressive in the second half.

Final

The High School failed to win the Fitzgerald Shield after an exciting final in Fethard on Tuesday. Liam Lawlor failed to win the toss and his team were to play with a strong wind in the first half. High School were dominating the game in the first half but hit too many wides. To make matters worse, Killenaule scored two good goals against the run of play. Brian Carroll scored an excellent goal before the interval to give the Clonmel side a one point advantage. The second half, against a strong wind, was going to be a battle.

High School opened the second half brightly and scored three points without reply to stretch the lead to four. It was the impeccable free-taking of the Killenaule centre-back that was to be the downfall of the High School. He seemed to be able to put them over from any distance. A last gasp effort by the High School was strangely cut short by the referee who blew the final whistle when Seamus Lawlor had possession of the ball thirty yards from goal.

Special mention must be made of the High School captain, Liam Lawlor, who was magnificent at centre-back. Tony Ryan, Peter Hally, Seamus Lawlor , Brian Carroll and Shane Kearney also impressed.
