The High School played with the wind in the opening half and took full advantage by converting most opportunities that were created. The whole team settled quickly to the task. The High School players were the stronger all over the field. Within fifteen minutes, the Clonmel lads had registered seven points. Michael O’Brien then found the net following a good pass from Ciaran Lorigan, who was controlling proceedings in the middle of the park. The Clonmel lads continued to work hard, stretching their commanding lead the whole time. J P Fitzgerald acted as provider for Denis McGrath to snatch our second goal. The very much in-form Michael O’Brien goaled again just before the break. Ciaran Lorigan’s very accurate and assured free-taking was also a very big factor in the High School’s lead.
The Clonmel lads maintained their workrate in the second half. Ciaran Lorigan dropped back deep, to assist his own defence. Michael O’Brien and JP Fitzgerald got the two High School second half goals, showing their opponents that they were not going to sit on their lead.
This was an excellent team performance. Wing-forwards Thomas Hill and Stephan Buckley competed bravely throughout. Alex Kirwan was busy at mid-field. Graham Quinn struck a lot of quality ball into the forwards. Conor Walsh and Darragh Ryan were always strong and reliable in the centre. Well Done lads!

Corn an Phiarsiagh U 15 Hurling

Clonmel High School earned themselves a well deserved win in their opening game of the U15 Munster Hurling Championship. The High School found themselves trailing by seven points at half time, Doon CBS 1-6 to High School’s 0-2. Our Doon opponents were reduced to fourteen players, just before half-time, because of a sending off. The High School had it all to do after the interval. The strong breeze helped the High School lads in their comeback.
In the opening half, the High School started slowly. Dean Horton stood out because of his workrate and tenacity. The second half saw a complete turnaround. Points from the excellent Bill Maher, Billy Hewitt and the ever dependable Michael O’Brien kept the Clonmel lads in touch. The High School lads were caught in a race against time to rescue this game. Two goals in quick succession came minutes before the final whistle. Emmett Ryan scored the first, followed by the talented Bill Maher. The High School lads were now a goal in front. This lead was well defended to the end. Much rejoicing followed the final whistle!
Liam Carey played a fine game in goal. The full-back line was well marshalled by Michael O’ Sullivan, The half back line, which was under extreme pressure in the first half, was led by the towering Jonathan Ryan. Our midfield pairing battled gamely. Dean Horton, must surely get the vote for the ‘Man of the Match’ award! In the forwards, our key man on the day was Bill Maher, He got good support from Emmett Ryan and Michael O’Brien.
Overall, this was a fine team performance. However, a lot more effort in training will be required if we are to progress in this competition.

This was a game of two halves. St Fintan’s totally dominated the opening half. They hurled with great fluency. The High School lads were unable to match them. At half-time, no-one would have given us a chance. However, with the resumption of play the High School lads hurled with great intensity and determination. The High School lads did all their scoring in the second half, as Doon had done in the opening half. This very spirited second half performance very nearly produced a surprise result.
All fifteen players struggled in the first half. Diarmuid O’Sullivan, Shane Lawlor and Sean Carey lead the recovery.

The High School emerged as worthy winners of their second group game against Bruff. This encounter against a Limerick side provided a very good competitive test for the Clonmel lads. The scoreline may suggest an easy victory, but in fact it does not indicate the closeness of the contest. The High School played with the aid of a very stiff breeze in the first half. In the opening half our forwards, all six players contributing, had scored 4-11 in contrast with Bruff’s six points. This comfortable lead put us in a very strong position as we turned to face the wind for the second half.
The High School forwards were even less successful than Bruff in playing against the wind. We only managed four points in total, these scores coming in the final ten minutes of the game. Before these scores came, we were forced to defend our goal on a number of occasions.
The foundations for this victory were laid in the opening half. Donnacha Lonergan and Denis McGrath bagged three goals from play between them. Both players positioned themselves under high dropping balls and were ready to take full advantage. Sean Carey, again playing with great confidence, goaled from a penalty. Carey’s overall contribution to his team’s perfornance was considerable. He was an inspiration to all his team mates. Others to impress on the day were Luke Moore, Shane Lawlor, Ciaran Lorigan and Alan Lonergan.

The High School Senior Hurling team comfortably overcame Ballingarry in their opening game of the season. The High School lads performed very strongly as a unit. They showed great commitment and courage throughout the match.
Ballingarry appeared to settle more quickly into the game, they went into an early three point lead. The High School gradually settled to the task in hand. Wing forward Alan Lonergan fired over our opening point. Padraig Hickey added another. Sean Carey converted three frees in succession. Donnacha Lonergan, Shane Lawlor and Sean Carey all added more scores. Sean Carey, now playing at centre forward, scored a very fine first half goal to give his team the comfortable first half lead that they deserved. It was Shane Lawlor, playing at midfield, who acted as provider. The half-time score read 1-10 to 0-5 in favour of the High School.
The High School outscored Ballingarry by 5points to 4 in the second half. Daniel Harvey struck the High School’s first two scores of the second half. Hickey, Carey and David Hoyne all converted scores to maintain our strong lead.
Our goalkeeper and six backs performed very well on the day. Diarmuid O’Sullivan, at full-back produced a really strong performance. He was consistently first to the ball and cleared his lines well under pressure. Lorcan Ryan and Luke Moore were also particularly strong in defence.
Despite many strong performances, Sean Carey stood out for his work rate, his mobility and his ball control. He took on a lot of responsibility and is really enjoying his hurling at present. Well done to all involved.

The High School got their First Year County campaign off to a magnificent start by beating old rivals Thurles CBS by a one point margin. Thurles CBS have a very good record against High School First Year teams in this competition. This victory will be a big boost to the High School lads in their next two group games.
The High School lads started very strongly, scoring an early point and a goal. These early scored proved decisive. The High School then added another goal to give them a comfortable lead at half time, 2-01 to 2 points.
In the second half, Thurles CBS worked extremely hard to reduce the High School’s five point lead. The High School lads showed enough resolve to hold out and secure the match. This was a very important win for the High School lads.
Adrian McGuire, the High School Goalkeeper had a very good game. He very bravely came off his line on a number of occasions to avert possible danger. Our three full backs were very steady and secure. Full Back Diarmuid Murphy was particularly impressive. Kevin Larkin, at centre-back looked really comfortable in possession. He was well assisted by Jason Mullins and Diarmuid Devaney. Bill Maher and John Kehoe both won a lot of possession and struck a lot of ball into the forwards. Bill Maher scored an excellent individual point in the second half at a time when the High School lads were in danger of losing their lead. Our wing forwards, Aidan McGrath and Christopher Browne also struck a lot of ball, despite the close attention of their opponents. Aaron Barry showed great skill and courage to score his excellent goal. Alex Hart got the High School’s opening score to set us on our way to our first win of the season.

The U-15 Hurling team was defeated in their opening game of the competition by a very strong Cashel side, who went on to win the competition. The High School lads rallied in the second-half to produce a very good performance. However, Cashel were worthy winners. Michael O’Brien’s second-half performance caught the eye. Dean Horton impressed in defence. The High School had to manage without the services of its best player, Conor Ryan, who was very sick at the time.

The High School was no match on this occasion for this Thurles CBS outfit. Our opponents dominated the game from beginning to end. They were very strong throughout the field. No weaknesses could be found, despite the valiant efforts of our players. Our team did battle bravely to the final whistle. Luke Moore, Shane Lawlor and Darragh Ryan were our best defenders, while Ciaran Lorigan and Richard Fenton competed best out the field.

Rice Cup – Under 14
The High School preparations for this competition included a visit to Killenaule for a challenge match against the Vocational School, in early March. Billy Hewitt played a star role at centre-back, he proved to be very effective in going forward.
We played Callan CBS on their home pitch in our opening group game of the competition a month later. The High School turned in a very strong performance and won easily. Michael O’Brien went on one of his goal scoring sprees. Gearoid Buckley scored two fine points at wing-forward.
We faced Thurles CBS in our second group game on our adopted home pitch, Clonmel Og. This was a game of mixed fortunes for both sides. Thurles eventually emerged as the victorious side, but they had to work all the way to the finish. Shane Ryan gave an outstanding performance at midfield. This High School team has been consistently scoring goals in games. Michael O’Brien produced some more first class finishing to keep the High School in a challenging position.

A special mention for two of our First Year Hurling Talents, Michael O’Brien and Shane Ryan. Both students have the special distinction of having represented the High School on three different hurling teams: First Year, U-15 and U-14. Both students made outstanding contributions. Well done, lads!
Noel Russell has been hugely involved in the training of all the High School hurling teams over the course of the year. He has been a source of great encouragement to our young players. We all hope to see our young hurlers continue their involvement in the game, during their school years and beyond. Noel would like to see the South Tipp clubs producing the stars of the future. Finally, we wish our players a happy and successful Summer with their clubs on the hurling field.
